What if scrapboy ruled the world?
A patched-up, hands-on love letter for World Environment Day
If I ruled the world …
you’d probably notice the difference pretty quick.
There’d be fewer landfills.
And more laneway workshops.
Less scrolling.
More screwing things back together.
Less throwing out.
More thinking twice.
Because if I ruled the world,
nothing would be “rubbish” unless it really tried.
🧵 The Mending Movement would go mainstream
Ripped jeans? Patched.
Broken chair? Re-glued.
Wobbly wheel? Fixed with a smile and some leftover bolts.
We’d have “fix-it festivals” instead of Black Friday sales.
🧰 Kids would get real tools
Not toy ones — real ones.
With a grown-up by their side and a project that matters.
We’d teach resilience through screwdrivers and kind words.
♻️ Every neighbourhood would have a sharing shed
A place where you can borrow a rake, a sewing machine, a hug, or a cuppa.
Because not everyone needs their own leaf blower,
but everyone needs community.
🚲 Bikes would rule the road
And not just fancy ones.
Rusty ones, repainted ones, hand-me-down ones.
We’d have pump tracks where there used to be car parks.
🗑️ Bins would shrink. Minds would grow.
The landfill bin would be the last resort.
Not the easy option.
And compost bins would have better real estate than letterboxes.
But here’s the thing.
I don’t rule the world.
And I don’t want to.
Because I already see kids fixing broken things.
I see families growing new habits.
I see neighbours leaving lemons at each other’s gates.
I see adults learning to say, “I don’t know … let’s figure it out together.”
That’s what running the world should look like.
Not top-down.
Not polished.
Just patched up, piece by piece, with grit and love.
So here’s my World Environment Day challenge:
Fix one thing
Start a community swap
Build something scrappy and beautiful
Pass on a skill
Say, “We can fix that.”
Because we don’t need perfect.
We need people who care enough to try.
Who keep showing up.
With bandaids and bobby pins and buckets of belief.
We are nature.
We are neighbours.
And we’ve got work to do.
Happy World Environment Day,
💛 scrapboy
