What if costa the garden gnome ruled the world?
A compost-loving contemplation for World Environment Day
If I ruled the world …
we’d start the day in the soil.
Literally.
Just a minute.
Just your hands.
Just to remember what’s holding us all up.
Because beneath the concrete, the chaos, and the calendar reminders …
is the earth.
Always the earth.
And if I ruled the world,
we’d treat the soil like the sacred stuff it is.
Not dirt to be scrubbed off,
but life to be protected.
Here’s what I’d plant first:
🌿 Compost bins would outnumber wheelie bins
Scraps would become soil.
Banana peels would be celebrated.
Coffee grounds would be sacred.
And every worm would be thanked for their service.
🧺 Clotheslines would return to their rightful place
In backyards. On balconies. In hearts.
Because there’s nothing like the smell of sun-dried socks
to remind you that the planet is still spinning beautifully.
🌱 Community gardens would replace fences
We’d grow pumpkins over our boundaries
and talk while we water.
Seeds would be shared with stories, not price tags.
🧘♀️ Slowness would be an act of resistance
We’d sit with a cup of tea and actually drink it.
Not scroll through it.
We’d observe. Notice. Breathe.
Because that’s what gardens — and people — need to thrive.
🌼 Wonder would be taught in schools
We’d teach children how to listen to bees.
How to smell the weather.
How to grow something just to give it away.
But the thing is…
I’m already ruling in my own way.
Not with power.
But with presence.
Not with laws.
But with leaves.
And so are you.
Every time you compost.
Every time you grow.
Every time you care quietly.
You are shifting the story.
So this World Environment Day,
don’t race to save the world.
Tend to it.
Grow with it.
Water a plant.
Say thanks to the sun.
Make a garden in your glovebox.
(Okay, maybe not that last one … but then again, maybe yes.)
Because change grows slow.
And slow is powerful.
We are nature.
We are gardeners.
And we are already growing the future.
Happy World Environment Day,
🧡 Costa the Garden Gnome
