What if the way we live at home was the most powerful climate solution of all?
Not just the gardens and compost heaps (although I’m a big fan of both) ...
but the way we care.
The way we show up.
The way we talk, listen, share, and grow together.
You see, I don’t have children of my own — but I’m surrounded by them.
They’re my neighbours, my best friend’s kids, the ones who wave as they ride
past on bikes.
I see them planting sunflowers, asking big questions, learning how to be part of
the world — not just visitors in it.
And I’ve realised something ...
Regenerative families aren’t about perfection. They’re about presence.
What regeneration looks like at home ...
In my world, it looks like this:
Worms wriggling happily under the sink in a kitchen worm farm
A slow start to the day — feet on the floor, eyes to the sky
Sharing the last of the raspberries
Fixing things instead of tossing them
Talking things through when they feel crunchy
It’s not flashy.
But it’s deeply alive.
It’s what happens when we stop treating family life as a to-do list …
and start treating it like a living, breathing
part of nature.
Because that’s what it is.
Four pillars of regenerative family life
Here’s what I’ve noticed about the families that feel most connected to the Earth
and to each other.
They’re not following rules — they’re following rhythms.
And they live by these four regenerative truths:
1. Rhythm
Regenerative families have a beat — one that flows with the seasons, the
sunshine, and the souls around them.
They honour:
Slow mornings
Garden walks after rain
Rest days and story nights
Growing something together — even if it’s just a windowsill sprout
This rhythm reminds them they’re not machines.
They’re ecosystems.
2. Reciprocity
In nature, everything gives and receives.
Regenerative families ask:
What are we giving back today?
Who are we caring for beyond ourselves?
How can we say thank you — with our hands, our time, our choices?
Care flows in all directions.
And that’s what makes it powerful.
3. Restorying
These families are rewriting old stories.
They’re composting the ones that say:
“We’re too small to make a difference.”
“Kids should stay out of grown-up problems.”
“This is just the way the world works.”
Instead, they’re telling new stories.
Stories where kids lead.
Where love is louder.
Where regeneration is normal.
4. Relationships
Everything good begins in relationship.
With each other.
With the land.
With the bugs, the birds, the great big sky.
Regenerative families know that care isn’t something you say — it’s something
you live.
It’s in the way you laugh.
The way you share.
The way you pause to listen, even when the kettle’s whistling.
Start with what you’ve got!
You don’t need a compost bin or a veggie patch to be a regenerative family.
You just need willingness.
Curiosity.
And a little wildness in your heart.
Because every family — no matter the shape or size — can grow a culture of
care.
And that? That’s how we change everything.

So, here’s the truth (from someone with dirt under her nails and hope in her heart):
You don’t have to be a parent to be part of the village.
You don’t have to be perfect to make a difference.
You just have to start where you are.
Because we are nature.
And when we live like that?
Even the smallest moments start to bloom.
With soil love,
