sunflowers

hello!

Hi greenthumbs. It’s dirtgirl here! This week it’s a SUNFLOWER SPECIAL!

Together, we’re going to find out all about sunflowers and how to grow them. We’re even going to learn how to make a sunflower house!

For something to do inside, there are some super sunflower activity sheets.

In our Love Food Club, we’re making oatmeal and sunflower seed cookies! And on my blog for kids, you can find out how to grow a rainbow garden.

So are you ready to get grubby? Let’s grow!

super sunflowers

Sunflowers are like big, happy faces that smile at you every time you walk into your garden. I love their big beautiful flowers, their huge leaves and chunky stems, and especially all the seeds that live right in the middle of the flowers. Have you ever tried to count how many seeds are in a sunflower?! Sunflower heads can have over 1000 seeds in them!

Sunflowers are amazing!

let’s celebrate

Sea Week is on from 12-18 September! Sea Week is about loving our sea, getting to know stuff about the sea and discovering things we can do everyday to protect and care for the sea.

And don’t forget Talk Like a Pirate Day on 19 September!

grow

Sunflowers love the sun and they love warm weather.

Choose the sunniest spot in your garden. You can also grow them in a big pot or container. Plant your seeds about 4cm deep.

There are lots of different types of sunflowers. Some of my favourites are:

Giant Russian

Sunbird

Evening Sun

Double Dazzler

Moonwalker

Here are some more tips on how to grow your sunflowers.

grow a sunflower house

today’s the day

This episode of Today’s the Day is all about sunflowers (it goes for about 10 minutes). We talk sunflowers, chill out with some sunflower yoga moves and dance to ‘buzzy buzzy’! You can find the song words below.

listen

Now it’s time to listen to a podcast from Growing Giggles called ‘Let’s learn about sunflowers’. It goes for about 8 minutes.

And check out this happy sunflower music playlist!

handle with care

When you buy seedlings from the nursery, they usually come in plastic trays or pots. Most of these can be recycled. Check the bottom…is there a recycling symbol? What number is on the symbol? Check to see if they can go in your recycling bin.

Here’s another tip! Before you pop them in the recycling bin, see if you can reuse them for growing your own seeds! This is a great way to save money and a helpful way to reduce plastic! Just make sure you give them a good wash first.

You can make a rainbow garden by planting all sorts of different coloured plants and flowers…including yellow sunflowers of course! Find out how on my blog.

good news

A 9 year old girl called Frankie has started her own newspaper in Victoria, Australia! It’s called the Cheer Up Weekly and includes interviews with friends, a pet report and ‘five jokes that will make adults laugh’. She delivers it to letterboxes in her neighborhood on her rollerblades!

Frankie, you rock!!
