Get funky in the compost!

Compost rocks!

Hi greenthumbs

Did you know that this week is International Compost Awareness Week? It’s one of my favourite weeks of the year. Why? Because compost is AMAZING!

We can put our food scraps into the compost and it will turn into beautiful, healthy soil that we can put into our veggie garden to help our food grow! Costa the Garden Gnome and I call it magic, because it’s how we turn our food trash into treasure! Compost rocks!

Do you have a compost? Some people buy compost bins from the shops, but you can also make your own if you have big people that can help you!

Here’s a cool idea I found – how to make a compost bin out of old pallets!

Herb hero of the week

Mint

Do you like mint? There are loads of different mints … plain old normal mint, Vietnamese mint, Moroccan mint, peppermint and even chocolate mint! I use my mint to make mint tea. I just pick some mint leaves and put them into a teacup of water (or a teapot) and let it sit for a few minutes, and then I sip it. Refreshing! And it also makes my tummy feel good.

You can grow mint in the garden or in a pot. Mints like plenty of watering and don’t like too much hot sun. What else does mint like? Compost! But, be warned, some mints like to grow as far as they can! That’s why some people like to grow it in a pot, so it can’t escape!

How to … plant a seed

Super seeds to plant

Do you live in the Southern or Northern hemisphere? If you’re not sure, ask your big people! In the Southern hemisphere (where I live), we’re in the season of Autumn right now, but for kids in the Northern hemisphere it’s Spring! How amazing is that!

Remember, your hemisphere stays the same(unless you move overseas to another part of the world!), but your season changes four times a year(that’s Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring).

Once you know which hemisphere and season you are in, you can work out what seeds to plant (because some plants like warm weather and some like cold). Here are three seeds that you might like to plant this week:

Northern Hemisphere (Spring) –

·      Tomatoes

·      Basil

·      Sunflowers

SouthernHemisphere (Autumn) –

·      Lettuce

·      Chives

·      Carrots

Today’s the Day

Check out my NEW breakfast TV (not on TV) show – it’s called Today’s the Day. This latest episode is all about compost! It goes for about 8-minutes.

We cross live to Costa the Garden Gnome to see what he’s up to, and we also get up and do some exercises and dance to one of my funky tunes! It’s way better than normal news, because it’s NOT BORING and we only talk about happy things! Adults can watch it too, but they better get ready to get funky with us!

Be in the show

Do you want to be a remote reporter for Today's the Day?! Right now, I’m calling out for 1-minute videos (filmed in ‘landscape’ view) for my ‘meet my plant’ segment. To find out how to send in your video just email me at dirtgirl@dirtgirlworld.com for more details. Different families have different rules about emails and videos, so remember to check with your big people and ask for their help!

Have a great week in the garden greenthumbs!

And remember, compost rocks!
